BugMD Cat Care Guide For Fleas and Ticks
A Complete Guide to Flea & Tick Control for Your Cats & Home
At BugMD, we understand that every cat is unique! We know that cats can be sensitive to different things, which is why we've developed our plant-powered formula that's safe* for your furry family members. Just follow these simple instructions to keep your cats protected against fleas and ticks.
Getting Started with BugMD
We provide our Flea + Tick Concentrate in an easy-to-use solution that requires simple dilution with 27oz of filtered water in the provided reusable spray bottle. This ensures the perfect concentration every time, making it safe* and effective for cats when used as directed.

BugMD and Your Cats Safety
BugMD Flea + Tick Concentrate uses a combination of clove oil and cottonseed oil, which are diluted to ensure safety while maintaining effectiveness. Our formula is specifically designed to be pet-safe* while effectively eliminating fleas and ticks.
IMPORTANT: TEST FOR SENSITIVITY FIRST
As with any new product, we recommend conducting a sensitivity test before full application:
- Mix the concentrate according to instructions
- Apply a small amount of the diluted solution to the back of your cat's neck
- Wait 1 hour to observe any sensitivity
- If no signs of sensitivity occur, proceed with full application
Application Instructions
Important Note: Do Not Use on any animals including cats under 12 weeks old.
The BugMD Method:
- Gently part your cat's fur in the opposite direction of growth
- Hold the diluted spray bottle solution from 8-12 inches away from the cat
- Start by spraying at the tail and work toward the torso
- Treat the cat's entire coat including including legs, tail and underbody, fluffing the hair backwards to help the spray penetrate through the coat down to the skin
- Do not oversaturate your cat's coat and do not spray on open wounds, abrasions, genitalia or face
- Rinse your cat with water after treatment
- Apply 2-3 times per week, or as needed
Note: If you see fleas return after initial treatment, remember that treating your cat alone isn't enough. You'll need to treat their entire environment to break the flea life cycle. Pay special attention to:
- Pet bedding
- Furniture
- Carpets
- Your pet's favorite spots
Tips for Sensitive Cats
Some cats may be hesitant about being sprayed. Here are some helpful tips:
- Always perform a test spray first: This helps check for sensitivities and allows cats to adjust to the new scent.
- Take it slow: Be patient and create positive associations. Some cats need time to adjust to new experiences.
- Alternative application: For spray-shy cats, you can:
- Apply the solution to your hands or a cloth and cat it into their coat (wash your hands thoroughly after using this method)
- Offer treats during application
- Use application time as bonding time
- Create positive associations: Apply before pleasant activities like walks or playtime.
Break the Flea Life Cycle
For complete protection, treat both your cat and their environment:
- Indoor spaces: Use BugMD Flea + Tick Concentrate on surfaces, bedding, and furniture
- Pay special attention to cat rest areas and play spaces
- Treat regularly to prevent reoccurring flea and tick invasions
What Should I Do If My Cat Shows Signs of Sensitivity?
Reactions to BugMD Flea + Tick Concentrate are extremely uncommon, particularly when following our recommended test application process and using the product as directed. However, just as humans can be sensitive to plant-powered ingredients, some cats may experience reactions ranging from mild to moderate. These reactions typically occur due to over-application or when cats groom and ingest the product.
Possible Behavioral Changes to Watch For
These responses are generally temporary and should resolve within 24 hours:
- Excessive vocalization or whining
- Foaming at the mouth or drooling
- Changes in appetite or feeding behavior
- Unusual or erratic behavior patterns
- Mild tremors or twitching
- Increased irritability
- Noticeable lethargy
- Hiding or avoiding usual resting places
- Reluctance to return to treated areas
Physical Signs of Sensitivity
While our plant-powered formula is designed to be gentle, allergic reactions can occur with any plant powered product (just as some people are allergic to peanuts or other plant-based substances). Watch for:
- Redness or irritation at the application site
- Hives or raised bumps on the skin
- Excessive scratching
- Dry or flaking skin
- Hot spots or areas of inflammation
- Excessive grooming of specific areas
What to Do If You Notice Any Reactions:
- Immediate Steps:
- Stop using the product immediately
- Gently bathe your cat with mild, pet-safe soap and lukewarm water
- Document any symptoms
- Monitor your cat closely
- When to Contact Your Vet:
- If symptoms persist beyond 24 hours
- If your cat shows signs of severe discomfort
- If you notice any respiratory changes
- If your cat exhibits extreme lethargy or unresponsiveness
- If skin reactions worsen or spread
Remember: While our clove oil and cottonseed oil formula is designed to be safe* for cats when used as directed, every animal is unique. Any unusual reaction should be taken seriously and monitored carefully. We recommend keeping your vet's contact information handy when trying any new cat care product.
For urgent cases we recommend contacting the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (APCC) that is your best resource for any animal poison-related emergency, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. If you think your cat may have ingested a potentially poisonous substance, call (888) 426-4435.
